AFCON 2023 : SUPER EAGLES BEGIN ON A POSITIVE NOTE

The Super Eagles of Nigeria began their campaign in 2023 AFCON qualifier against Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on a winning note, beating their counterpart from Sierra Leone by two goals to one in a hard earned victory at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The Super Eagles playing behind close door, was all out to put smile on the faces of Nigerians after their dismal outing performance against black stars of Ghana that led to the elimination of the super eagles from playing at the world cup.
Right from the blast of the whistle, the Eagles tutored by the new technical adviser, Jose Pessiero were dictating the pace of the game with Victor Oshimen missing goal opportunities in the 6th and 9th minute.
The Leone Stars defence was up to the task, keeping Nigerian attackers led by goal machine, Victor Oshimen at bay.
The visitor drew the first blood in the 11th minute through a powerful header by John Morsay, following a brilliant cross from the left side the pitch.
Alex Iwobi got the equalizer in the 16th minute with wonderful finish, following a mesmerizing move by Moses Simon.
Super Eagles continued to pile pressure with dangerous incursions into the vital area of the Leone Stars but goalkeeper Mohammed Kamara was in a superb form to deny super eagles from having a field day of flood of goals.
However, the Napoli youngster, Victor Oshimen was on song to score the second goal and match winner in the 40th minute after a brilliant cross from Ola Aina was headed down by Moses for Moses to tuck in the second goal.
With the introduction of Oghenekaro Etibo and Joe Aribo, the Super Eagles looked more dangerous, springing passes easily but could not convert their chances.
The Leone Stars gave the Eagles a scare in the 59th minute when they had the opportunity to level scores fired blank with the net yawning for goal.
Nigeria will take on Sao Tome and Principe in a day two of AFCON qualifier in Marrakesh, Morocco on Monday.
