Lagos NUJ remembers Alhaji Ladi Lawal, former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Daar Communications who died on the 23rd of May, 2009, making it 12 years today.

Ladi Lawal was Chairman of NUJ Lagos State Council between 1991 and 1994. He also became President of NUJ in 1994.

Lawal was an ace broadcaster, a journalist par excellence, and an administrator of note who contributed immensely to the pen profession.

He was a man of his words and a goal getter. One can recall and hardly forget his act of resistance and protest against General Ibrahim Babangida’s annulment of the June 12 1993 Presidential election that produced late Chief M.K.O. Abiola as winner.

His contributions to the media industry in Nigeria were notable which earned him different awards including Best Student (News) Reporting, NIJ (1978); and Best Student (Broadcasting) NIJ (1985).

He studied Journalism at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NUJ) and was awarded a Diploma in Journalism in 1985

Lawal was a former Vice President (Africa) of the International Organisation of Journalists.

He served in the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism having presented several papers on media and humanities both at home and abroad.

The history of NUJ will be incomplete without mentioning Ladi Lawal, a great media Icon who will be long remembered for his versatility and professionalism.

We are proud of his achievements and we pray that his gentle soul will continue to find eternal rest.

He has passed to the great beyond but his legacy lives on.
