OGUN LGSC Organizes final Workgroup meeting for Community Health Extention Workers

In continuation of its mandate at ensuring quality, efficient and effective workforce at the local government level in the State, the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission has organized the final batch of workgroup meetings for Community Health. Extension Workers (CHEW) and Junior Community Health Extension Workers, JCHEW, serving in Ado-Odo-Ota, Ipokia, Ifo and Yewa South Local Government Areas.

The training followed the successful hosting of the same Programme in Ogun East Senatorial District.

Speaking at the Workgroup Meeting held at the Royal Institute of Health Technology, Emily Adesanya Conference Hall, Arigbajo in Ifo Local Government on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, LGSC, Ms. Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo who was represented by the Full Time Commissioner lll of the Commission, Dr Abolaji Fagbayi said the Dapo Abiodun led government takes training and re-training of workers as a priority, for them to stand out amongst the comity of local governments in the country.

Her words “being the final phase of a designed 8-phased programme, the arrangement is meant to reduce the travel distance of our members of staff and also bring the Commission closer to the Staffers on the field.

She said the short course is of utmost importance because this cadre occupies prominent position in the strategic implementation of the Primary Health Care programme of the government, saying, “there is need for constant training and retraining to upgrade knowledge and skills as well as roles of Community Health Extension Workers and to expose them to new trends in health service delivery system through some careful selected topics”.

She stated further that,”the training will also equip participants to cope with the changes and challenges brought about by the recent Covid-19 pandemic ravaging the country and the entire world at large”.

“While believing that, it will also give members of the public a change of mind concerning the attitude of Primary Health Care staff generally”, she added.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Dr. Adeolu Olufowobi stressed the importance of the training as it will equip Community Health Extension Workers on modern day technology and also rebrand them to fit into the assignment given to them.

While appreciating the Commission on behalf of the participants, Mrs. Adekunte applauded the Commission for the training facilities, while promising to improve in the discharge of their duties at the grassroots level.

She then appealed to the Commission that, like an Oliver Twist, “their cadre requested for more of this gesture for them to be better equipped to cope with the changes and challenges in the health sector”.
