Ogun State LGSC Harps on Vital Roles of Social Welfare Officers to Community Development

Community Development and Social Welfare Officers have been told to continue to work in synergy with their community in order for government to identify their needs and be involved in the planning and implementation of government facilitated projects, so as to have a virile and egalitarian society.

The chairman, Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, Ms. Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo said this during a day workgroup meeting for Community Development and Social Welfare Officers, held at Crescent Muslim Professionals’ Hall, Leme, Abeokuta.

Onabanjo, during the session, reiterated that the meeting is aimed at refreshing their knowledge, “interfacing with you to know how well you are fairing in your various duty posts and reawaken your consciousness to proper discharge of your duties”.

She opined that Community Development Associations play pivotal roles in governance. Stressing that the association should work in synergy with the government to identify their needs and be involved in the planning and implementation of government facilitated projects.

“You are very close to the people at the grassroots, the onus is therefore on you to encourage, persuade and involve people to participate actively in the development of their environment” chairman said.

She added that community mobilization also involves the pooling of resources together for developmental purposes.

“The Commission found it important to put this workgroup meeting together to improve your service delivery” she noted.

Onabanjo then urged participants to be well disciplined and effective in the discharge of their duties.

“As Community Development and Social Welfare Officers, you are expected to deploy your expertise to sensitize and orientate the citizens on their expected roles and responsibilities to facilitate desired developmental projects” she said.

In his submission, the Permanent Secretary in the Commission, Dr Adeolu Olufowobi, commended the Officers for their dedication to duty.

He said, “during the commission’s tour of all the local governments in Ogun State, we had meetings with all the Community Development Councils, “I want to tell you that it was heartwarming to hear very good and positive comments about our Officers on the field”.

Dr. Olufowobi affirmed that the meeting is aimed at refreshing their knowledge, know how they are doing in their various duty posts and reawakened their consciousness to proper discharge of their duties.

“When we talk about Local Government Service Commission and Local Governments as a whole, Community Department is a very vital organ and you are therefore advised to utilize your experience with the community, because, you are the ones they see constantly on the field” Olufowobi said.

While appreciating the Commission on behalf of the participants, Mr Daud Oladele promised on their behalf, to improve in the discharge of their duties at the grassroots level.
