It was a huge relief for Manchester United after clinching the 2022/23 carabao cup at the expense of glory seeking Newcastle at the Wembley stadium.

Erik Ten Hag’s side whitewashed Newcastle by two goals to nothing to win the carabao cup for 22nd time, the highest by any club .

The victory brought to an end 6year trophy drought since lifting Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

In the first 15th minute of the game, Eddie Howe’s side was in full control, dominating proceedings with occasional counter attacks from the Red Devils.

In the 33rd minute, Casemiro rose high to head the ball into the net from Luke Shaw’s free-kick for the opener after the VAR check adjudged Casemiro to be onside.

Barely six minutes later, Manchester United got the second goal to seal the victory with an own goal by Sven Botman, deflecting Marcus Rashford’s shot into the net.

At the resumption of the 2 half, Newcastle United were all over the pitch, desperately searching for goal but the combative defense of Manchester United led by Raphael Varane, Martinez,Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan Bissika was rock solid.

The introduction of Alexander Isak added more fire power into the attack of Newcastle but David De Gea was in fine form, making daring saves.

However, what could have been the third goal on the stoppage time was saved by Loris Karius after a close range from Bruno Fernandes.

The Newcastle fans who thronged to the Wembley stadium in their thousands, in anticipation of victory were disappointed, with Eddie Howe’s side still on 54 years waiting for a trophy and 68 years for domestic trophy goes on.

While Manchester United still have the chance to win quadruple this season. Erik Ten Hag’s side is still in the race for the FA cup, Europa League, and possibly Premier League titles.

The Red Devils will trade tackles with West Ham United in the FA cup, while on Sunday Liverpool will host Manchester United at Anfield in the EPL fixtures.
