Chairman of the Ogun State Football Association and Executive Board Member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, has declared that football has truly “returned home” to Ogun State following Team Ogun’s thrilling 4-1 victory over Team Kwara in the gold medal football match.
Speaking immediately after the match at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Majekodunmi credited the State Government for the support and enabling environment that birthed the success, saying the current administration’s desire to develop sports had continue to showcase the growing strength of Ogun’s sports culture, with the MKO Abiola Sports Arena serving as a beacon of progress and pride.
He noted that the team would have scored more goals, if they had made use of the opportunities they had in the game, noting that the home crowd provided an electric atmosphere, which added to the excitement of the game.
“We must thank our Governor for his unwavering commitment to sports development. The renovations of the MKO Abiola Sports Complex have brought new life to football in Ogun. This is a homecoming for football here”.
“You can see the stadium is filled to capacity, the people of Abeokuta and Ogun State are football lovers, they came out in their thousands to support their team, and that kind of passion is what football is all about.”
I am very happy that we secured the gold medal in the male football competition and a bronze in the female category. Of course, I would have loved for us to win gold in both, that is the dream we all pray for. But that’s football; it teaches us patience and resilience,” he concluded.
Earlier, the Golden Eaglets, which were at the festival as Invited Junior Athletes, won the bronze medal with a 2-0 win over Team Kaduna, at the Remo Stars International Stadium Ikenne.
In the female category, Team Delta struck gold after defeating IJA in the gold medal match 7-6 via penalty shootout, after the normal 90 minutes ended in a goalless draw.
